The next Branchage event will be taking place in March and it sounds like a very exciting one! The event will be a live performance based piece featuring ‘manual animation’ by Daniel Barrow. Winnipeg-bred, Montreal-based artist Daniel Barrow uses obsolete technologies to present written, pictorial and cinematic narratives centering on the practices of drawing and collecting. Since 1993, he has created and adapted comic book narratives to “manual” forms of animation by projecting, layering and manipulating drawings on overhead projectors.
Daniel Barrow recently won the Sobey Art Award (the Canadian equivalent of the Turner Prize), and he is flying from Montreal especially for this one off event. He will be performing ‘Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry’ which combines overhead projection with video, music, and live narration to tell the story of a garbage man with a vision to create an independent phone book chronicling the lives of each person in his city.
Last year Branchage Festival commissioned the band Bo Ningen to write a new soundtrack to one of their favourite anime films CAT SOUP. This twisted and surreal anime follows little kitten Nyatta as he travels to the land of the dead and back in an effort to save his sister’s soul. More disturbing than Itchy & Scratchy, the film is full of dreamlike freakish images. The Japanese sound-merchants have a sound that’s as distinctive as their hairstyles and they’re famed for their exhilarating live performances with head-bending jams and wig-outs. Bo Ningen will perform their live soundtrack to Cat Soup as part of this event which will be the first performance since its premiere in Jersey.
